“A farmer was keeping Marvel illegally as pet, he was rescued and immediately sent to us in the orangutan clinic near Medan in North Sumatra. I take care of the animals, also of the very young infants and the sick ones, I prepare everything for Marvel’s surgery. His throat sac was infected and we had to draw up the pus, which takes about an hour. Marcel was fed only with soft food after the surgery: bananas and papayas. He was quite composed, but like other orang-utans also suspicious. We had to trick him to take his medicine. As Marvel came to us, we had firstly his leg amputated. The leg was necrotic, since Marvel’s owner had his ankle tied too tightly with a chain."
