YEL (Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari) was founded in 2000. The foundation concerns to natural conservation and community development. The establishment of this foundation was a positive respond to emergence of several life environmental problems and natural conservation, particularly against pollution threatening and vanished important life supporting systems for all creatures over the world. YEL is a non-profit organization located in Medan that prepares technical support, skills and performs directly educational activities on life environment and encourage the awareness of community, conservation program for threate-ned species and community development, conducts emergency relief and humanitarian
aid especially in the area of Leuser, National Park Mountain.
Mission
Working for sustainable life environment with continual importance for
all communities. To perform this mission YEL does not ignore the possibility to give contribution widely either in North Sumatra, Indonesia, or even internationally with a priority for participative approach, sustainable solution based on sciences and human interest.

YEL’s Activities
YEL has a strong commitment to achieve the above mentioned mission and vision through the following activities:
a.To promote and encourage natural conservation attempts in Indonesia.
b.To increase awareness and community care for life environment conservation.
c.To attempt the planning and appropriate management in life environment education and natural conservation program through conservation for orangutans in North Sumatra and ecological tourism development.
d.To conduct advocating for environment conservation.
e.To provide humanitarian support.
Divisions
YEL has three divisions as follows:
1. Conservation Division. This program is focused to protect the Sumatran Orangutans and their habitat through law enforcement and to release confiscated Orangutans. For implementation of this program the PanEco foundation built a collaboration especially with YEL and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) which is supported by several national and international conservation organizations.
2. Humanitarian Division. Its aim is to provide emergency relief and humanitarian aid especially in the area of Gunung Leuser National Park which was strucked by catastrophe. This division covers:
- Medical support, which consists of emergency relief and prosthetic programme.
- Non-medical support, which consists of logistic aid, small medium entrepreneurship for prosthetic patients, reconstruction and rehabilitation of hospital and housing for tsunami victims, and also improvement for handicapped children in Nias in the area of construction and capacity building.
3. Education Division. This division consisted of Bohorok Environmental Education Center, this program was set up on September 1999, by identifying both potencies and problems that can be used as material for the environment education center according to natural condition of Bukit Lawang area and surrounding, Outreach & Education Program, Ecolodge Bukit Lawang Cottages.
